The Northwest Side Community Development Corporation (NWSCDC) organized a “Rally for Safe Streets” at North 31st Street & West Capitol Drive on October 9 to combat an increase in speeding and reckless driving that has been impacting the community.

Traffic safety is becoming an issue of huge concern in Milwaukee neighborhoods. Recent crashes and fatalities in many local communities point to the need for solutions that will make streets safer for everyone, including people of all ages who walk, use the transit system, bike, or drive.

The growing epidemic of reckless driving in Milwaukee, particularly on arterial streets like Capitol Drive, has taken the lives of far too many drivers and pedestrians. NWSCDC has worked to lead the initiative to make the roadways safer on Milwaukee’s Northwest Side.

“NWSCDC and their community partners are showing the type of leadership and response that sends an important message to reckless drivers,” Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton said, “No families or loved ones should be left to grieve because reckless drivers refuse to obey traffic rules and value the lives of those they share the road with. The consequences of erratic driving is tearing families apart and as a community, we have to come together to take deliberate ownership in preventing more senseless traffic tragedies from occurring.” Common Council President Hamilton will speak at the rally.

Northwest Side CDC staff is coordinating with the Wisconsin Bike Fed and other community groups to create an active presence at multiple intersections along the Capitol Drive corridor, including 27th Street, 31st Street, and 35th Street.
